to Richmond and after a most satisfactory interview with the military authorities in that city took the oath of allegiance and is now on a visitation of that part of the diocese which the presence of hostile armies has for a long time prevented. I present herewith the affidavit of Mrs Johns and the certificate of her oath of allegiance. I can not refrain from saying of her that she is a lady of eminent piety and worth and beloved and admired by all who know her and that she is the very last person who should be made to suffer for the war which she had no agency in bringing on and the horror and miseries of which she did all in her power to alleviate.
If indeed by her acts she had subjected her property to seizure which I am sure she has not yet I submit that by taking the oath she is entitled to a restoration of the property even if it has been rightfully seized.
This subject has been brought by me to the notice of the Government, but thus far I have been denied the poor boon of a hearing which I now earnestly ask under a profound conviction that I am rightfully entitled to a full restoration of the property and its accrued income.
Tazewell Taylor
Trustee of Mrs A E Johns
