0491 I am really writing from Baltimore but head this letter as below that you may know my address. 103 St. Mark's Place New York City May 30th 1865 "Personal" yet semi-official My dear General: You doubtless remember your Medical Director, Suckley,- I am he, - but resigned my commission about six weeks ago. After General Lee had surrendered I felt that I had gotten through, and a long cherished desire for rest, and home, I thought could well be gratified. In April 1864 I was sent to the now called "Army of the James", as Medical Director to "Baldy" Smith. Then with him with the 18th Corps: then &c. &c., until I was made Medical Director of the Army of the James, with rank of Colonel - from which position I resigned. So much for myself. My letter to you this time has no selfish object. I learn that you are Chief of the Bureau of Freedmen's Affairs. This appointment does honor to those who have selected you. Now that fighting is over
