of his freedmen and some white laborers to cultivate his farm;- that to the deep surprise and distress of yr petitioner, said farm has not as yet been turned over to him, but still remains in the occupancy of the military authorities.

Yr petitioner in conclusion solemnly avers that it was never in his contemplation to abandon said farm, but that his removal was occasioned by a desire to secure his family from harm in the event of battle, and that his return was prevented as herein before stated; and that instead of following in the wake of the Confederate Army when forced back this last Spring, he continued to remain in the County where he now resides and has been residing for the past fifteen years.

Yr petitioner therefore prays, that his home & farm may be speedily restored to him, it being the only means of an honorable subsistence left to himself and family now utterly dependent.

And yr petitioner, as in duty bound, will ever pray &c.
