Memorandum of care of property of Mr Saml. C White

Writes to Col. Brown that he is aged 65 and desires restoration of his farm near Yorktown "Temple Farm" containing about 500 acres, in which he resided up to time of advance of Maj. Genl. McClellan. Farm was one mile S.E. of forts & it was necessary for safety of his family to leave the place. Requests at least permission to gather the fruit of his peach orchard, to support his family. Also that Grist Mill be restored. Has not been engaged in the War or held office; had taken amnesty oath and expects to yield obedience. Hopes his property will be restored, to which he thinks himself justly entitled. Col. Brown refers to Capt. Flagg to ascertain political status; condition of farm & whether needed for use of Refugee and Freedmen. Referred to Lt office to report. Reports it cultivated by Freedmen and cannot be given up without serious loss to Gov't Peace Orchard would be of no use to him if given up as cost of guarding it would equal to value of crop. Grist mill was destroyed & one erected in its site by a Freedman Col Brown orders it given up after compliance with Cir. 3 Bureau RF & AL Current Series.
