I am not excepted from the benefit of the Proclamations of President Lincoln, or President Johnson. I am not worth the fourth part of $20,000. On the 26th day of June 1865 (as will appear by reference to the accompanying certificate of the Administration of the Oath of Allegiance) I acknowledged my allegiance to the United States in Richmond, When I went to provide for the support of my large and suffering family, which is now sadly in need of the Rent collected by the United States Government from my Tenant.

It is mine in law and in fact- and it is not for any cause, subject to Confiscation: and I need the rent of it, as much as any one can do.

Trusting that, in the spirit of justice and humanity, you will recommend its restoration to me, I remain Yours Very Respectfully

Mary Anne Garnett
