Warwick County Oct 2. 1865

Capt C.B. Wilder
Supt. Freedmen &c Peninsula

I beg leave to submit for your consideration the the following statement of facts: George Jones died sometime during the winter of 1864 aged about fifty four years, seized of a tract of land lying in the County of Warwick, containing about Two Hundred and sixty nine acres, know as Skiffs Creek. The said George Jones died unmarried, intestate and without issue, leaving William Wood his Uncle and principal heir at law, who is about eighty years of age, has never been out of the Union lines since the evacuation of the Peninsula by the Rebel Army & who took the oath of allegiance to the Govt of the United States, before Capt Hennesey of the 5th Penn Cav. on the 16th day of June 1862, then Pro. Marshall at Williamsburg. The said William Wood was in the Navy of the United States during the War of 1812 & served on board of the U.S. Frigate Constitution and participated in all the naval fights which were fought by that gallant ship. Participated in the engagement when the Constitution captured her B. Majesty's ship Gruinier [[Guerriere]], and also when the Cyane & Levant surrendered as trophies to our arms. These facts are of easy proof, by reference to the books of the U.S. frigate Constitution on file at the Navy Department in Washington. The said William Wood most respectfully requests that the land above described may be restored to him in consideration of the above facts & under the recent order emanating from the Bureau at Washington restoring all property which has not been confiscated and sold to its rightful owners.
