The Freedman within mentioned acknowledges having taken the ox in question but States that the Government took possession of the same and he was placed in the employ of the U.S. Forces at a stated amount per month. The officer who had charge of him being ordered suddenly away was unable to settle with him, but in lieu of the amount due him the ox was turned over to him without papers to balance his account against the Government. It is respectfully submitted. shall the Freedman be deprived of the ox upon which he depends to a great extent for his living and which he received in good faith as compensation for services rendered to the Government.
