132 L.R.C.322. 2d.V.66. [] Crandon T. F. P. Bvt Maj A Q M &c 50/ [] Rec'd Back May 18"/66 Office Asst Supt York Co Yorktown Va May 15"/66 Respty returned with information that I have examined into the within case, have seen Braxton and he states that he never lived in Middlesex and never made a contract for labor there, he rented 10 acres of land at this Office last Nov (1865) and is now cultivating the same. He never was married to Elsie but by order of his master lived with her, he has never lived with her since the rebellion but after he came within the Union lines he went back to King & Queen Co. where she lived. after her, three times but she would not come with him. He has a wife and child here with whom he has lived for over three years. Last fall Elsie came after him when the case came up before the Freedmens Court and he was ordered to live with his present wife. The character of Braxton stands good here. He made his statements very honestly and fairly and is very desirous of retaining his present wife. Not knowing as all the facts in the within case are fully known the liberty is taken of returning this communication for further instructions. (Sg'd) F. J. Massey 1st Lt. 5th Regt V.R.C.
