The old code allowing search for and seizure of arms in possession of Negroes was repealed by act of General Assembly of 27th Feby last. The negroes have a full right to keep arms and ammunition. Any case of taking or attempting to take them from Negroes by citizens with or without the order of a court or magistrate will be promptly reported. By order of Maj Genl J.M. "H'd Qrs Negro Affairs Dept Va. & N.C. Genl Supts Office "Fort Monroe Va May 10th/62. Rodney Churchill Asst Supt "Negro Affairs at Yorktown. You will take immediate 363 "possession of the Whittaker farm in Yorktown County "said farm being the property of the late Thomas "Whittaker who died in the rebel army and work "the grist mill on said farm for the benefit of the "Negro Department." This order was complied with and the land has since been held by this office. Sg'd S.C. The "Whittaker farm" has never been reported on any Land Report forwarded to this office by the Supt of the 5th Dist. Information is desired as to the number of acres this Farm contains.
