Respectfully returned to Maj James Johnson V.R.C. Supt 6th Dist Va with the following report.
After an investigation into this case I have the honor to report that the child Sofia Pratt an orphan was legally bound to Pleasant T. Burrows at the time of my visit to the place of Mr. Burrows the whole family were absent at a church meeting. I examined a very intelligent cold woman who lives there, as to cruelty and she said the girl was particularly well treated. "That she never was struck a lick, and eat from their own table" &c. I subsequently saw Mr. Burrows who assured me that the girl was treated more like a child than a servant. She is being taught and getting along very well. The family are much attached to her and she to them.

Office Asst Supt Fauquier Co
Warrenton Va Aug 21st/66

Respectfully returned to Bat Maj W.R. Morse Supt 4th Dist Va with information that I have seen the writer of the within communication and she wishes very much to keep the child, having become attached to him while he was sick and is willing to give him an education having already learned him to read. The boy seems to be delicate and sickly, and appears to be fond of the lady (Miss Sewart) and says he will not go and live with his mother who mistreats him. Miss Stewart wishes that the parties to whom she referred be seen on this subject She remains here two or three weeks longer.
