The greatest part of U.S. Lands in this state, fit for Cultivation, lie in the Counties of Columbia, Alachua, Marion, Hillsboro, and Hernando in East Florida. The larger portion of these lands are of inferior quality. The best lands, generally, having been entered or located by the State of Florida, under act of Congress, of 1841, for "Internal Improvement" purposes. Although the lands above referred to, are what are called "second rate" lands, they generally lie in large bodies, will produce Sea Island Cotton of the best quality, Sugar Cane, and the tropical fruits of this latitude, & besides being very valuable for their timber, are fully capable of supporting communities or colonies of Colored people, who are desirous of settling in the state.
