City of Richmond) being duly sworn, testified, "that on the night of March 10th/66 his barn, and hen house, each securely fastened with a pad lock were broken into by a party or parties unknown to him, and a quantity of poultry with a hand saw taken therefrom, that the property found in the possession of the above named man was the property stolen from his premises." The Court found him guilty of "grand Larceny" and sentenced him to "one years imprisonment in the Va Penitentiary." Jones states that he can prove his innocence by a colored man named "Ben" who at the time the property was stolen, was living on Dr Harrison's farm, and from whom he bought the property in question.

Respectfully returned with report that from the best information this man was a member of 1st N.C. Reg't and while at Newbern, Cotton was taken from some of his neighbors by some party unknown, but supposed to be Union Soldiers. On his discharge and return home, he with other Union man was accused with stealing the Cotton. Complaint was made and a warrant procured for his arrest, and he was informed that he could not escape the "Whipping Post." The man appears to be credible and states that if he had money and influence he could prove an "alibi." - From all the testimony I am of the opinion that it is a case of persecution on account of political opinion.
