found in this County. A man by the name of "Sweedes". I have made enquiry of the oldest inhabitants, and of the county Clerk all of whom state that there is not a resident of the County by the name of Sweedes.

I try to keep myself informed of all abuses sustained by freedmen of this county, but have never never heard of such a case as the within mentioned.

The Paymaster General reports that these is no record of the claim in the case of the within names man at the Pay Department It is probable that the case has not been filed, and unless the name of the claim agent with whom the papers were left can be ascertained. It will be impossible to obtain any information respecting the claim.

Respectfully returned. In Feby last a contract was made with Samuel .C. Armstrong [[/underlined]] to take charge of the 9th Dist of Va. at a salary of one hundred and fifty dollars a month to be paid from this office. 
My instructions from the Commissioner are to continue to pay this officer at this rate.
