Respectfully returned to Bvt Maj Stone Supt 2d Dist Va. with the information that I have in person visited James Bailey — a highly esteemed citizen of this County, and found there the within mentioned Judy Smith — or Bowlin. Said Judy is a woman of from twenty five to thirty years of age, quite intelligent and healthy looking but having a wooden leg, which somewhat disables her.

I taked with the woman herself and found her pleased with her home, where she has been living for the past five years, and perfectly satisfied with her treatment, which she said would not be better. She told me that Mr Bailey had informed her at the close of the War that she was free and could

do as she pleased, but had desired her to remain with him and offered her $30. a year — the same price he had given her neice Henrietta Jones for her services.

To this $30. he added certain privaleges. Baily acknowledges that he owes Judy back wages, and says he will pay her whenever she wants the money.

Respectfully returned with the report that Capt Bostwick left at my office about June 18" the sum of $363.20/100 Three Hundred and Sixty Three 20/100 Dollars with orders to pay the same to Serg't Michael Brown of Co. "A" 10" U.S.C.T. — for which a receipt was given him. There was no information given as to whom the money belonged.

This sum was turned over to M Brown as ordered, and I hold his receipt for the same. The Discharge was turned over with the money, but not mentioned in the receipt. Efforts have been made to find this Serg't M Brown, who is said to be living in the south part of Norfolk County, but have not as yet found him

In regard to the case of Capt Foote nothing in known here but from the statement of Serg't Henry White which is as follows, *

"At the time time we were discharged I saw Capt Foote hand to Corpl Lunkett. — a brother of Mark Lunkett a package. I feel sure it contained the money pf Mark Lunkett The Captain always kept the money of his men, at their request, and paid it to them when called upon. I never heard any one complain of not receiving his
