Office Asst Supt E.S.V.
Bureau R F & AL
Drummondtown Va Sept 16/66

Respectfully returned to Genl S.C. Armstrong Supt. 5th Dist. of Va with information that after a careful investigation as far as possible, it appears that the churches should be placed at the disposal of the M.E. church claiming them. The deeds are all made out in the name of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the United States of America, while the denomination now holding them is called the Methodist Episcopal church South, and was formed of persons leaving the former church owingto a split on the slavery question in 1844, but they never claimed the building until their members were so much increased during the war as to give these some chance of success. sg'd Geo. Last spring at my suggestion it was seized by the Military Authorities, after which it was used in supplying the troops at this ost with fish.

Bureau RF & AL H'd Qrs Asst Com'r Dept Poto'c Richmond Va Sept 26'/66

Respectfully forwarded to Maj Genl Howard Commissioner Genl Schofield being absent, and Genl Burton his sucessor being prevented from assuming command at present. by reason of an accident no military officer can be found willing to assume the responsibility of ordering that the within names building be retained. The question appears to be whetehr no, (intimes of peace) the military has the power to stay the execution of a civil process.
It is alleged by reliable persons, that it is the object of the citizens of Lexington by turning the agent of the Bureau out of doors, to get rid of having the Bureau represented in their town. I have no doubt but the civil court will issue a writ of ejectment, which writ will be executed unless the military power interferes.
