0084 Lexington Va April 7th 1866 Bt Major W Storer How Sir At a meeting of the Overseers of the poor of Rockbridge county held at Lexington this day. The following anssers to your communication of Mch 25th 1866 were ordered to be returned to you. 1st. We have provided for the pauper freedmen in the same manner as [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] the White paupers, except that we have not room at the Poor House at this time - but the Court of the County has ordered the Overseers to put up additional buildings for the use of Freedman - as soon as the funds can be procured the buildings will be erected. 2nd. We are unable to say to what extent but they will maintain & support the Collored paupers in the same way & manners as the Whites. 3rd. The Colored inhabitants of the County will be Taxed in like manner with the Whites according to the Law - but we are of the opinion that many of the Colored inhabitants will not pay the Tax Very Respectfully John Wallace Prest of Board of Overseers W.
