The county expenses (which includes officer fees, costs of keeping in order public buildings county roads, bridges, support of poor &c &c) are estimated from June till to June. The amount is approximated as near as possible at each June term, and the court then levy a poll tax upon each free male resident above the age of 16 years sufficient to cover the amount. Which the sheriff is ordered to collect and disburse to order.

Our court was not organized until August 1865 and therefore nothing could be done until December term in the way of levying for county expenses. The court then to raise a fund sufficient to defray the expenses of the county for the [[strikethrough]] county [[strikethrough]] year beginning June 1865 to June "66 levied a poll tax of $2 upon each resident free male above the age of 16 years. With instructions to the collecting officer to execute to each colored freeman a receipt for the same, and report to the court a full list of the names and amounts thus collected of this class. 

This amount if collected will raise a small surplus, with which it is contemplated to aid the upon and for other purposes, until the next levy can be made and collected.
