in this Division. Except those of the "Prot. Epis. [[Protestant Episcopal]] Freedmen Com" the opening of which has been deferred by certain financial embaressments of that Society, Miss Ada W Smith the Supt has arrived in this City and the School will be opened during the coming month. The Schools of the "Am Miss Asso" [[American Missionary Association]] have been somewhat curtailed from lack of Funds. They are now partially supported by contributions from the Colored people. The number of private Schools is on the increase and several of them are very well taught.

The Norfolk Branch of the Freedmens Sav and Trust Co is doing well with a steady increase of deposits.

There is a general feeling of anxiety and alarm manifested by the Freedmen at the proposed discontinuance of the Bureau on the 1st of Jany 1869. And their desire for its continuance in some form is almost universal. It's discontinuance before the State is reconstructed would be a calamity to the colored race.

I am General
very Respectfully
