May 31st 1868 George Williams was assaulted by three (3)  white men in 1866 and shot through the arm by one of them. Failing to have them punished Williams brought action for damages, case tried May 1868. Jury brought in verdict for $140 damages. On motion to set aside verdict, efforts were made to compromise. The Judge stated that if the defendents gave Williams less than $500 he would grant a rehearing, as the evidence showed the assault to have been a brutal one, and damages were inadequate. Two of the defendents were bankrupt, the third offered to pay $250 which was accepted. |
