Reports shooting of Reed by Staples and that Reed was slightly wounded by bird shot. It appears that Staples had hired Reed's wife, and that the former considered the latter's frequent visits to his wife as preventing her from proper performance of her duties, and ordered Reed not to come upon the premises at all. Reed went again to see his wife & was halted by Staples who had a gun in his hands, which he fired at Reed as he turned to go back. Parties to appear before the Mil Comr. Filed. |

That at the same time a colored man named Anderson Snoddy, was taken with Varner, and that while the men were flogging Anderson, Varner escaped and while running he had several shots fired after him.
