Statement of Harry. R. Jones

Sent as a teacher from the city of New York, and who was eleven months teacher in the 1st Regt U.S. colored troops, while on his way to the boat, bound on an excursion to Dutch Gap, was arrested for not having a pass, marched through the street for an hour and then, with other prisoners, placed in one of the houses in the burnt district; there was no roof to this house, and no protection from the burning rays of the sun.  He remained there for several hours, an was finally released by the interposition of Lieut Baldwin, Vice President of the Richmond Mission League.
