A crowd having assembled numbering some sixteen or twenty person, they commenced beating him in an unmerciful manner, and inflicting seven severe wounds on the Head, fracturing the skull and exposing the Brain. He was brought to this place on the evening of that day, supposed to be in a dying condition, and incarcerated in the county jail. Subsequently he was removed to where he could receive care and treatment, and although removed back again by Order of the Sheriff, yet he is now in a fair way of recovery.
The Magistrate who had him incarcerated refuses to accept bail for his appearance at Court, and will hold him in confinement until after his case is decided - The Court meets on August 6th.
This Employer, a Gentleman of high character speaks in the highest terms of his fidelity to him, and can only account for his misdemeanor, by the fact of his having been urged to intoxication, The colored man states that he did not know any thing that occurred, except when they were inflicting the wounds upon his head - when he beged them to spare life - he also states that there is a decided hatred in that vicinity - to colored men who have been soldiers in the United States Army.
