the jury on this charge.
The third case was that of two young men (cold.) charged with stealing a pig valued at Four dollars, last April they acknowledged the theft and in default of bail was put in jail where they have since lain. they were sentenced to two months further imprisonment and to receive ten lashes on the bare back.
The fourth case was that of a cold. woman charged with stealing chickens and potatoes 2 pounds - last June. unable to procure bail she awaited in jail her trial. She had no witnesses. The testimony was wholy circumstantial but the jury considered it sufficient and brought in a verdict of guilty and the Court sentenced her to receive ten lashes. There seems to be a prejudice on part of the whites towards the colored which shows itself in many way [[strikethrough]]and[[/strikethrough]] even in Courts of justice as shown more particularly in the case of Hern. There never were any steps taken to bring the really guilty parties to trial, simply because they were white men. From what I have observed it takes less evidence to convict a colored man than it does a white.
I am very Respectfully
