I have the honor to report that but three cases have been tried in the Civil Court in this Sub Dist. during the month in which Freedmen were a party concerned. Two Freedmen were tried in the Circuit Court of Madison Co. One was convicted of grand larceny upon the evidence of a colored woman. The other was convicted of a misdemeanor upon the testimony of a white person. The commonwealths attorney charged him (the Freedmen) with a felony in the indictment but the judge ruled "that it was only a misdemeanor." They were both sentenced one to imprisonment in the Penit-
