refer to this report, in vindication of the charges made against me, and most emphatically say, that the Mayor did positively refuse to hear the evidence of the witnesses who were present for the defence. The following morning, allusion was again made by his honor the Mayor to the case, when he reiterated what he had said the day previous, and stated he would not allow the boy to confirm what he had previously stated regarding his witnesses, remarking however that the case should again be brought before him on Monday the 1st Oct. If my report was false and unfounded, why should he have the case resumed, after the boy had been sent on for indictment before the Grand Jury? and further the boy had already furnished the Mayor, with the names of the witnesses who are willing to come forward and prove the purchase of the cap by the prisoner.
