of Judge Chambers seemed to me to be fair towards the freedmen, he asked the members of the jury whether they had formed any opinion in regard to the guilt or innocence of the prisoners, and in one case allowed testimony to be admitted in their favor, which was objected to, and which he said was not strictly in order.
