which have been tried in the Counties of Cumberland & Charlotte wherein the accused was charged with petit larceny and sent on to the Circuit Court for trial. I thought the bail required was excessive, it being $50 - this amount being as far beyond the reach of the prisoner as $1000 would have been seemed to me to be "excessive bail" not only in consideration of his poverty stricken condition but in connection with the fact that he would have to continue in jail until March 67 although he had then been confined 29 days. A motion was made by his council at my suggestion to reduce the bail but the court declined.
