bail for their appearance at the Court, as a motion to that effort, was overhauled by said Court, also the case of one Alfred, Brown, Freedman, who was tried before the Circuit Court, for the County, of Frederick, held in this city, during the last month, for stealing Hogs, and though this feat was not substantially proven against him, the jury found him guilty of the offense, and sentenced him to (6) six months confinement in the county jail, the Judge, however, reduced the sentence to (3) three months. The council for the Freedman made an effort to have a new trial granted, but it was overruled by the court, and he has therefore made an application to the Governor of the State for his pardon, and release, basing his application on the evidence received in the case, and another case in this City where a Freedman William, Dean, was arrested and confined placed in irons, in the County Jail, on the commitment of Wm. G. Russell, one of the Justices of the Corporation of Winchester, Va, for disorderly conduct, without a fair and impartial trial - if any at all - and without the chance of letting his case be known to me, as agent of the Bureau, and I did not hear of it until he was put into the custody of the Jailer for safe keeping, and confinement, upon hearing of the case, I as [[agent]] of the Bureau made a demand for his trial, or release, which
