Capt Wm. P Austin
Supt R.F. and A.L
First Dist of Va

Sir
In compliance with Cir No 10, Series 1866, I have the honor to report that since my report of the 31st. of December 1866, but two cases of note have been brought to my attention by the Colored people of this Co. First, that of an aged man by the name of P Harry Daughtry, who complaained that he had been badly beaten by Joshua May (White) of this Co. without cause or provocation, and that he, May, had cocked a gun and placed the muzzle near his face threatening to shoot him, this happened around the 6th of January, and on the 8th night he came to me, and reported the same.
I wrote a letter to Mr Will Wright J.P. of this Co informing him of the facts, and requested that May might be arrested and punished if found guilty.
He filed his warrant for the arrest of May, and gave it to Daughtry, who brought it to me, I sent it to the house of Mr James Batten Constable of this Co, he not being at home, it was left with Batten's wife, with request that it be handed to her husband, it run along a week or two and May not being arrested, I sent to Battens house to learn something in regard to it, Batten was not at home, but was informed by his wife that she had delivered the warrant to her husband
