even when brought to trial for any offence against the law, and their evidence not taken with the same degree of faith as that of a white man. The Magistrates as a general thing would not hesitate to take the bare word of a white man in preference to the oath of a black man, and my firm belief is, that if there was no officer of the Bureau present in the Sub District that the Freedmen would have very little justice afforded them.
