freedman first gave information against Wade's Father, who, for killing a negroe here some time ago, was sent to Richmond, where he died. This case was referred to "Thos H. Bernard", presiding Justice of the County. I have not since learned the result.

The second was by "Robt. Tinsley", vs. "John H. Greer", M.D. The latter had some time ago borrowed a bushel of corn of the freedman, who, after the crop gathered, expressed a desire to have it back. On the 11th December Greer sent for him, to take it, and being of the time in liquor, began to abuse him most violently, for mentioning anything about the corn; proceeding, as is usual in all such instances, to indulge freely in threats of killing. The freedman, who from all I can learn, was very respectful throughout, took his corn & started with it to the mill. On returning, Greer, who was then in a field adjoining the road, called to him to come that way; but seeing that he had a gun in his hand, the freedman continued on his course. Greer, then, cursing violently, ran after, and on getting somewhat nearer, fired at, but luckily missed him. Plaintiff immediately after laid his case before "Elija Wade" J.P., who on the 15th Dec. had Greer before him, on warrant; but it appears Defendant then cursed and went on to such an extent, swearing in the presence of the Magistrate that he would certainly kill the Negro, that Mr Wade said he could do nothing with him, and concluded to put off the case to the 5th January, instant. Mr "Jimison", another J.P., who it appears was also present, remarked that to bind Defendants over to keep the peace did not amount to anything, and that all plaintiff could do would be to have him "presented" - next March. On the 5th Defendant [[strikethrough]] Plaintiff [[/strikethrough]] did not appear, and nothing was done. I requested
