Bureau Refugees F. A. Lds Sub Dist Bedford & Botetourt Cos Liberty Va. Feb 28th 1867 Bvt Brig General O. Brown A A A General Richmond Va. General I have the honor to report for the month of February 1867 In compliance with Cir No 10. 1866. that I attended the courts in both Bedford & Botetourt counties. In Botetourt there were no criminals brought before the court, and no presentments made against any freedmen. In Bedford, there were three colored men arraigned for theft; one named Bell. There were two witnesses against him. one saw him going from the corn house with three ears of corn & the other one with an arm-full. This criminal was found guilty and sent to county jail thirty days and had fifteen lashes given him on his bare back. The other cases are not yet disposed off.
