General:
As a record appendix to my Report of this date, agreeable to Circular No. 10, Series 1866, I have the honor, to submit the following facts connected with the shooting at & wounding of "James Preston," a Freedman of Franklin, in Roanoke County, on the 16th Inst.
On the evening of the 15th, a horse was mussed out of the stable of "John E. Hudson," residing on "Powder Mill Creek," about five miles from this place. The freedman James Preston having been seen in the neighborhood during the day, he was hunted up, but not found. It being known that he had relatives living in Roanoke Co., about twelve oclock that night, pursuit was given in that direction, by John E. Hudson, accompanied by "Jack Chetwood," "Wylie Bird," and one Burton, all white. At "Bonbrook," about nine miles from here, it was learned that a Negro, on a horse, both such as described, had passed about two hours before.
On the morning o the 16th Accused was standing in the doorway of a tobacco house on Mr "Wm L. Bernard's" plantation, about three miles from the line of Franklin Co, twenty miles from Rocky Mt, and eight from "Big Lick," Roanoke Co, where his Step Father, "Burwell Woods," his mother, "Lucy," and two young Girls were at work stripping tobacco. He was found at the place, by the others, on their arrival
