Burkeville, Va, April 27th 1867

I have the honor to invite the attention of the Asst Commissioner to the following case, of which I am officially cognizant of the facts here stated.

On 30th March complaint was received by the Asst Supr'dt, that on 28th March a young Freedgirl named Sarah Jane Vaughan of Nottoway County, Va, was knocked down and a rape. Committed upon her person by a Mr Harry Dyson of the same county. The Asst Supr'dt immediately brought the case to the attention of two Magistrates of the County, who heard the girls complaint under oath. The case seemed so clear and the guilt of the offender so evident that he was promptly arrested and bail was refused him. He was brought before the examining of County Court, on April 4th. The case was then entered into and the girl Sarah was Sworn, she gave her evidence in a clear straightforward manner. The substance of which was
