Freed person and insisted upon its being done, and it was done. There are several cases of assault of this character that has happened lately and have not been noticed by the Grand Jury. It is impossible for me to bring such cases to the notice of the civil authorities in person, in every instance, and if they are allowed to remain unnoticed it will not be long before it will be dangerous for a colored person to travel the public roads. If a Freedman commits an offence, no matter how trifling, he is brought before the Court at once; even if he walks across a white mans farm, with a gun in his Lands, to save distance, he is brought up without fail.

I am, General,
Very Respectfully, Your obt servant
Watson R. Wentworth
