In compliance with Circular No 10 dated Hd Qrs Asst. Com'r Va Richmond Va March 12th 1866. I have the honor to report that I attended the trials of John Butler & John Johnson. Two freedmen being tried for the murder of Henry Clay Lee, another freedman. The circumstances as aduced before the jury were, that John Butler was employed by Lee to assist him in his Lees Bake Shop. On Monday Feb 4th 1867 Lee was supposed to have gone away, where no one knew, one week after his body was found on the outskirts of the town, evidently carried and placed there with marks of violence upon his head. Butler who during this time was frequently asked where Uncle Clay was and gave several different answers, and conducted himself in such manner that Lees friends believed something wrong. It was found that Lee had on a certain suit of clothes on Monday night and when found
