I have the honor to report that there were no freedmen tried by the Courts of Surry or Sussex Co during the month.

At the the Surry Court Mr Hankins (white) was tried upon the charge of disturbing Devine services and was recognized to appear before the next Grand jury. The evidence went to show that Miss Amelia Howard Teacher of the Freedmens School in Surry Co was preaching to the colored people on Sunday, during the service Hankins entered the church and took a seat with his hat on. after waiting a short time Miss Howard said she wished that man would take his hat off  Hankins in a very indignant manner wanted to know what she had to do with it, he then walked up in front of the pulpit where Miss Howard was and made several ungentlemanly remarks when one of the colored
