HD. QRS. ASS'T. SUB-ASS'T. COMM'R. 4TH DIV. 2ND SUB-DISTRICT,
Burkeville, Va., July 31st 1867.

Bt Major. G. Mallery.
A.A, Adjt Gen'l,

In my Report of the Condition of Affairs for the month of June, I represented Affairs in Lunenburg County as improving, I regret that I cannot report as favorably for the past month, Since my last report, the lawless element in the County, have again been at work, One Freedman has been murdered, and the perpetrators of the deed not yet discovered, Another Freedman stabbed and mortally wounded by a White Man who has escaped to North Carolina, A citizen of the County named Davis was waylaid shot and mortally wounded by two other white citizens of the County, who have been arrested, The Civil Authorities regret this condition of Affairs exceedingly, but cannot remedy it.

Very Respectfully
Your Obdt Serv't.
D. J. Connolly,
Bvt Capt. U.S.V.
Asst Sub Asst Com'r.
