I have the honor to report that I attended the courts of my division during the month. There were no Freedmen tried in the county of Surry, and but one in Sussex Co. Samuel Ridley he was tried upon the charge of buggery and sentenced to one year in the penitentiary. The evidence went to show that over one year ago Albert Land by whom he was employed caught him in his stable one morning having intercourse with a mule, he informed him of the grave offence he had committed and Ridley promised him that it should never happen again. Some two months ago while riding along the road Mr Land came upon him suddenly and he had the lead mule of his Lands team backed up to the tongue of the wagon and was in the act of having intercourse with her. 

W.H. Basden was tried at the same court charged
