And every possible effort made to prove that their action was based upon the fact, that he was not a member of the Union League, and was opposed to them as a conservative in politics, and that these were the causes that led them to inflict, as was called, their hellish purposes. Six of the number only were arraigned before the court, and not one of them permitted to answer in self defence. The Magistrate also who investigated certain charges made by Goff, on the day previous to the whipping, against the old man Saunders, whose wife Goff had seduced, and who could have testified to the nature of the offence, was refused a hearing.

After hearing the statements of Goff (particular pains having been taken to bring him from another county) they were each and severally bound over, in the sum of fifty dollars, to appear at the next term of the circuit court - and firmly held in the above sum of fifty dollars each, to keep the peace toward the said Goff, and all other persons, for the period of six months.
