As soon as I heard of it I called on the acting jailor for the facts in the case and by my questioning him very closely he inferred that all was not as it should be, and informed the Court of my inquisitiveness, who called the matter up again and made another allowance giving her $8.00 — I will say for the jailor that when the first allowance ($2.00) was made he gave her $3.00 out of his own pocket.

I have also had a sample this month in Amelia Co. of dealing out justice by said Court in a case of an assault by a Southern man upon the person of a Northern man located here, which I wish to bring to the notice of the Department which I have the honor to represent, and which I have reported to the Military Commission, which is this. In August 1866, one John Cheatham accosted Rev. Thos G. Murphey (who is here ingaged in organizing schools, teaching, and preaching to the Freedmen) and asked him what business he had in this county? Mr. Murphy asked what right he had to call him to an account? Cheatham replied G-d d-n you I will show you what right I have, and thereupon struck him two or three times in the face and about the head and continued the assault until some bystander interfered and stopped it.
