I have the honor to report that on Saturday the 18th day of July three men (Father and two sons) name Alfred Payne and Jacob & John Payne attacked a colored man named Albert Davis who narrowly escaped being killed and still is in a dangerous condition. It seems from the facts in the case that there had been some trading between John Payne and Davis who meeting Payne asked him for his own, words followed resulting in the Paynes striking and beating Davis who Escaped and came some two or three hundred yards and fell

I had just so traveled from Fairfax county where I had been on business and hearing of the affair immediately went and saw the man Davis who was apparently in a ding [[dying?]] condition. I summoned medical aid had him conveyed to a house near by and then had warrants issued for the arrest of the parties and put into the constables hands. Who did not arrest them until Monday although he had an opportunity to do so on Saturday afternoon. Davis did not
