In compliance with Circular No 10, paragraph 3, Hd Qrs Asst Com'r Dist of Va. I have the honor to report that Thornton Olman (colored) was tried this month for the alleged murder of Wm Archer Key. Overton Dabney Commonwealths attorney & Wm R Ayletts were counsel for the prosecution. Beverly Douglas & Robert Montague for the defense. The trial commenced on Monday the 27th of July 1868 & ended August 29th 1868. The Jury found the prisoner guilty of murder in the second degree & sentenced him to ten years imprisonment in the penetentiary. The trial was dignified & impartial throughout. Douglas & Montague made a strong effort in his defense. The Jury at first disagreed a part being for murder in the first degree, a part for murder in second degree & a part for manslaughter.
