of carrying out the threat.

The Justice required security for good behavior in the sum of $500.00, failing to give which he was committed to jail. At the last term of the Court, an effort was made to have the amount reduced; but it was decided that the Court had no jurisdiction, and that the only method of redress was to apply for a writ of Habeas Corpus. I was informed by one of the members composing the Court that the majority were in favor of making the sum from $50. to $75, had they considered it in their power to do so.

While I think this an aggravated case, and am warmly in favor of making a proper example of any one so offending against the peace, I cannot but consider the security required as excessive. $200. or even $100. would, in my opinion, as fully have answered the ends of the law, and, under the circumstances, would have been more nearly in accordance with the demands of exact justice.

Very Respectfully,
Your Obt Servt,
