Office Asst Supt
Craig Roanoke & Floyd Co Va
Salem Roanoke Co Oct 2d/66

Respectfully returned to Capt Geo. R. Sherwood V.R.C Supt. 8th Dist Va, calling attention to the fact that the nearest point to this place at which the canal can be reached is thirty two miles from here and the hauling to that point would cost three times as much as the freight on the R.R. from Salem to Lynchburg.
Under these circumstances I have deemed proper to ask for further instructions

That is how people will find a specific letter that relates to anyone whose name is on the margin, or a Dept of Gov't, and other things. This should go first, then the names, etc... in the margin acording to the letter. The name isn't saying this letter was sent to this person (most times), but referring to an endorsement, or other issue. This is not like L.S. which has the person the letter is sent to in the margin. So if the Officer's last name was Armstrong, or Austin, for instance, the initial would be an "A." followed by a number. The number increased everytime an "A" letter was added. So as example: L.R.A.120. 3d.V.66. would mean it was Letter Received, A.120 (where you will find, for instance, a letter in reference to Armstrong, perhaps. It would be in the third Volume of 1866. So keep the initial the the following number together. YOu see this kind of thing when you transcribe Wrappers. You would find it across the top.
