Respectfully returned to Maj Genl O. O. Howard (through Asst Com'r of Virginia) whose attention is called to the enclosed copies of correspondence on the same subject between Genl Ayers commanding at that time and myself. The boy W. Kendrick (son of Mrs Kendrick mentioned) rode the horse in the service of the Rebel Gov't and after the surrender of Lee sold it. The horse was "taken up" by the Supt of this District, and is still on his papers, though I have the use of him, thereby (I suppose) causing the misapprehension of the boy Kendrick
