Respectfully returned to Maj James Johnson Supt 6th. Dist with the information that I have investigated the case referred to within, and find that at the time Caroline was bound to Mr. Owens (May 12th, 1866.) she was entirely destitute that Lieut Roberts made an endeavor to ascertain whether or not the child's parents were living but was unsuccessful. She is well cared, kindly treated, contented and happy, and wishes to remain with Mr. Owens. 
Maria is not bounded to Mr. Paine, but wishes to remain with him. She is also kindly treated, happy and contented.
