Copy of Report

Tyler House Hampton Va
Dec 12th. 1866

The undersigned agent of the American Missionary Association would respectfully report that he knows nothing of the matters referred to by Mrs. Tyler from personal knowledge: that he learns on inquiry that the Am. Miss. Ass'n never "took possession" of the premises, but that in 1862 Rev Chas. L. Lockwood and Mr. Chas. P. Day then Teachers of the Freedmen and under commission of the Am. Miss' Ass'n. occupying rooms in the Chesapeake Seminary were assigned quarters in the so-called Tyler House as abandoned property. by order of Genl Wool commander of the Post, given to Capt Burleigh Provost Marshal. and that subsequently others engaged in the same work were also assigned quarters there by military officers acting under the authority of Genl Wool and succeeding commanders of the Post that the building. at the time the first teachers were assigned quarters therein was abandoned by the overseers. and filled with the people called contrabands. and was in an exceedingly filthy and dilapidated condition. that the only articles of furniture referred to, found therein, was a bedstead and two wardrobes nearly destroyed. that the premises had been subjected to the casualties and ravages of war and no fences outbuildings or valuable shrubbery were found thereon. and that finally by improvements since made the premises are now far more valuable and in better order than when the War Department assumed the control of them as abandoned property and quartered the teachers therein
All of which is respectfully submitted
