Respectfully returned to the Asst Com'r with report that this land was restored by virtue of Special Order No. 145, date H'd Qrs Asst Com'r Dept of Potomac Richmond Va 26th Sept 1866. 
The buildings were not required for school purposes at that time and have not been since.
By my directions the furniture has been carefully kept by the men with whom Miss Drummond left it, and is now ready for use when called for.

Respectfully returned with information that the Bureau did not rent the land within mentioned, neither did they give any guarantee for the payment of the rent.
The Freedmen individually leased from Mr Cook, such a partition of his land as they desired, at a regular established rate, leases being regularly drawn up between the two parties interested, the same being approved at this office.
More assistance has been rendered Mr Cook in the collection of his rents than any other land-owner in the county, but the results have not been as good as desired. Mr Cook as I understand him, rests his claim for damages from the Bureau upon the fact that when the land was restored to him he was not allowed to select his tenantry, that by order of the Bureau he was compelled to lease land to parties who were unable to pay rent, that the rate allowed for each tenant was too small and that three hundred acres of woodland have been destroyed by "Freedmen" without compensation and he appearing to assume that the Bureau is responsible for the acts and trespass of individual Freedmen claims a consideration from the Bureau for damages done to his land.
I would in this correction state that every effort has been put forth by this office to allow none but Freedmen residing in "Newtown" to cut wood from his farm but owing to the scarcity of timber in this neighborhood this result cannot be accomplished without placing a guard over the same, which the force of this office will not allow.
