084[?] Report of Proceedings of Freedmen's Court of New Kent Co. for the week ending April 14th/66. Abram Clayton} vs } Thomas Fox} Action for recovery of a Horse with damages Plaintiff states that in March or April 1865 he took up a horse abandoned by U.S. Forces, that being a slave he gave Dep't. (Free Man) the horse to keep for him, until Christmas/65 Deft. now refuses to surrender him. Mr. Wm. C. Wade. In March 1865. Deft had the horse which was branded "C.S." appraised for $1200 Confederate money. Pltf. told Witness that he had given Deft. the horse to keep for him. Mr. Geo. T. Brumley Pltf. and Deft. were employed by him: in Oct./65 Deft. told him the horse was Pltf's. Pltf. told him he was going to give $25. for Deft's. small bay horse. Pltf. is honest and truthful. Defendant states that in March/65 Pltf. offered to sell him the horse: offered Pltf. small bay horse and $200 in Confederate Money which was accepted; produced as title, permit from Gen. Patrick to keep horse branded "U.S." Henry Bisbee. In March/65 was with Pltf. and Deft. Deft. proposed a trade and offered small bay horse with "book" for horse in question; that he saw both Pltf. & Def't. afterwards and they acknowledged the trade. Pltf offered said small bay horse for sale for $50 "greenbacks"
